Q. How do I apply for a Provisional Licence?

A. You can apply Online, by Post, or at your local Post Office.

Q. Do I have to pass the Theory Test before I can start learning to drive?

A. No. You can start driving once you have received your Provisional Licence from the DVLA. However, you must pass the Theory Test before you can do the Driving Test.

Q. Must I learn to drive with a Driving Instructor?

A. No. Anyone can teach you to drive as long as they have held the relevant licence for at least 3 years and are over 21 years of age. However, at this stage you are learning to drive, you are not a glorified chauffeur! Driving parents or qualified friends around may not be achieving the essential skills necessary to pass the driving test. For independent information about learning to drive take a look at SmartLearners.

Q. How long will it take for me to learn to drive?

A. It depends on how quickly you pick things up. The average is about 35 hours. However, if you spend most lessons driving round the Test Routes then all you are learning is how to pass a test. You should be learning the skills that you need to become a safe, responsible and careful driver for the rest of your life. So if you only ever do a Bay Park at the Test Center, for instance, then you are not getting the training that will equip you for real life on the roads.

Q. How do I apply for a Theory or Practical Test?

A. You can book a test Online, fill out a form and post it in, or call the DSA on 0300 200 1122. Here is some more information about the Theory Test and Practical Test.

Q. What will the Driving Examiner expect from me during the test?

A. There are a lot of myths about the test. A good instructor will sit in on every driving test. This allows them to see first hand what the examiner is looking for, as well as offering (silent) moral support from the back. Anyway, you are not paying them to sit and talk to their friends for 40 minutes back at the test center.

Q. Can I drive a van on my car licence?

A. It depends on when you passed your driving test and the size of the vehicle. If you passed your test after 1st January 1997 then you are restricted to the types of vehicles you can drive. Take a look at this guide for more information.

Q. Can I drive with a foreign licence in Great Britain?

A. It depends on the country that the licence was issued in, how long you intend to stay, and the type of vehicles you want to drive. EU citizens have the ability to drive in Britain using a licence, issued by a member state, indefinitely. A driving licence issued outside of the EU is only valid for use in Britain for 12 months. Here is more detailed information about driving in Britain with a Foreign Licence.
